The Serengeti Girls Run: Strides of Strength
On the Serengeti plains, 15 women ran not just for distance, but for possibility. Each mile fueled by a shared purpose – to uplift and empower Tanzanian girls who deserve the chance to learn, to choose, and to dream without limits. The 8th Serengeti Girls Run was a celebration of strength, unity, and the unspoken strength of women carrying each other forward.
The Serengeti Girls Run is not just a run. It is women standing side by side, proving that every step can spark change. Over three days, participants ran 13.1 miles (21 km) each day, alongside Grumeti Fund’s anti-poaching scouts and the wildlife they help protect. Every step across the western Serengeti carried a message: girls in Tanzania deserve opportunity, equality, and hope.
Opening Doors to Possibility
Before runners took on their first half marathon, they attended the Serengeti Girls Run career fair, where they engaged with 86 girls attending secondary schools enrolled in Grumeti Fund’s girl’s empowerment programs. Through poems, stories, dances, and a fashion show, these young voices spoke openly about the challenges girls face in many Tanzanian communities – from limited access to education to cultural barriers that restrict their opportunity.

The career fair was full of excitement. Students walked from table to table, learning about different professional paths they could take. Our conservation teams displayed work about protecting wildlife and partnering with communities. Hospitality teams demonstrated how caring for guests connects to caring for the land. Scientists showed how research helps keep the Serengeti informed and alive.
As they moved through the fair, students listened closely, asked questions, and shared smiles with friends as they uncovered curiosities for the careers available to them so close to home.
For one student, Bisara M., the experience was life-changing:
“Meeting the runners showed me that women can achieve anything. Seeing so many career paths at the fair gave me hope that my dreams are possible too.”
Her words summed up the day perfectly: when young people see what’s possible, they start to believe in their own future.
Hope and Shared Purpose
Among the many powerful moments during the run, participant Stacey C. offered a deeply moving reflection on the emotions she carried after meeting the students:
“I thought of the sweet and loving schoolgirls we met at the career fair possibly being faced with practices that bring emotional and physical pain; experiences their older sisters and mothers may have endured. It’s something I can’t imagine, but it gave me hope that with the support of organizations like the Grumeti Fund, more girls will have the courage and opportunity to choose a different future.”

Kaitlin K., one of the runners deeply moved by the experience, reflected on the impact of the career fair and how much possibility emerges when girls are given space to be heard. As she shared, “when girls are given a platform, they begin to thrive,” a truth made evident in the confidence, determination, and ambition the young women displayed throughout the day. Her words echoed the sentiment that gender inequality can be challenged one empowered girl at a time.
Kaitlin also shared how the physical journey became something far bigger than the miles themselves:
“Running 63km through the Serengeti, surrounded by women who began as strangers and ended as sisters, is something I’ll carry for the rest of my life. From listening to the girls at the career fair boldly share their dreams, to running beside wildlife that was nearly lost just 25 years ago, it changes you. Every step reminded me that when we lift one girl, we lift entire communities. This is what matters most, and a cause I will forever support.”

What It Really Means
The Serengeti Girls Run is a bridge. It connects women from around the world to the dreams of Tanzanian girls and to the importance of conservation that partners with communities. Every step taken – 39.3 miles (63 km) in total – is a step toward equality, opportunity, and hope.
This year’s run reminds us that empowerment is not abstract; it is lived in conversations, in career fairs, in the courage of young voices sharing their stories. We are deeply grateful to the 15 women who joined us, to the students who shared their experiences, and to our partners at Singita for taking on this journey with us.
The Serengeti Girls Run is a call to action: to stand with girls across Tanzania, to protect the landscapes that inspire them, and to ensure that every girl is running toward a future that excites her. Together, we can make sure the Serengeti continues to inspire generations and that every girl has the chance to thrive.
