The Grumeti concessions depend on a team of dedicated scouts who face the unpredictable task of protecting its wildlife every day. All Grumeti Fund’s scouts are from communities surrounding the protected area who serve to safeguard wildlife.
Each scout receives ongoing training to ensure the highest levels of effectiveness in the field, from intense fitness and weapons training, trauma care, tracking, and radio communication protocols.
With remarkable scent-tracking abilities, the canine unit can track poachers’ movements, uncover camps and detect weapons, snares, ivory, rhino horn, and bushmeat across the concession.
Our four canine scouts – Oke, Radar, DJ, and Mawenzi – and their six committed handlers, train tirelessly to excel in any environment.

In 2017, the Grumeti Fund integrated the EarthRanger system to collect real-time data across the concession. This real-time information provides the team with the insights they need to make informed, timely decisions that strengthen protection and operations.
Protecting the western Serengeti from poaching starts with spotting threats in real time. With scouts stationed at a network of elevated Observation Posts (OPs) manned 24/7, the Grumeti Fund keeps vigilant eyes on the landscape day and night.

Our work depends on the generosity of donors. Your contribution helps the ongoing protection of this crucial part of the Serengeti ecosystem and provides essential support to conservation and community programs.
