Research and Monitoring
The Research and Monitoring team creates long-term ecological records of this landscape, which are critical to make informed decisions about the protected area and its management.
The Research and Monitoring (RM) team collects data on climate, vegetation, wildlife populations, and key species in the western Serengeti. By combining long-term ecological records with wildlife monitoring on the ground, the team provides critical insights to support sustainable decision-making across the landscape.
Vegetation Surveys

The Research team conducts herbaceous vegetation biomass and composition surveys every year. Field technicians navigate tough terrain to measure biomass and identify plant species, helping to assess the landscape’s capacity to support migratory species and local cattle grazing.

Habitat and Wildlife Surveys

The Grumeti Fund regularly conducts two Aerial Surveys – the Aerial Game Survey, which estimates resident wildlife populations, and the Riparian Survey, which monitors key riparian habitats, nesting bird populations, and invasive alien plants. Together, these surveys help us understand the health of the ecosystem and how it is changing.

Elephant Collaring

Together with RISE, the Research and Monitoring team tracks elephants with GPS collars to analyze their movements and behaviors. This research is critical in understanding local elephant populations’ movements and behaviors, and it allows ground teams to mitigate human-elephant conflict in real-time.

Since 2003:
+5
fold increase in resident herbivore biomass
16%
average annual increase in lion population
14%
average increase in buffalo population
Key Accomplishments:
6
surveys on critical wildlife, habitats and vegetation annually
30
elephants tracked with GPS collars
600+
biomass samples taken annually
