Makuru joined the Grumeti Fund in 2005 as a Village Game Scout (VGS). Over the years, he progressed through several roles within the organization before stepping into the position of Conservation Manager in 2026.

Growing up in the nearby village of Motukeri, Makuru developed a deep connection to the land and wildlife that surrounds it. Today, as Conservation Manager, he leads the conservation operations that help protect these landscapes while supporting a balance between people and wildlife.

Makuru began his work with the fire teams before moving into wildlife patrols. Recognized early for his leadership potential, he advanced from Assistant Patrol Leader to Patrol Leader and Regional Leader and was later promoted to Section Manager in the Conservation Management Department in 2016.

Makuru holds a short-course certificate in Wildlife Management from the Pasiansi Wildlife Training Institute, as well as a Technician’s Certificate and a Diploma in Wildlife Management from the Mweka College of African Wildlife Management.

A passionate conservationist with strong ties to the local community, Makuru brings both experience and local knowledge to his work protecting this ecosystem for future generations.
